Lufthansa, FedEx to invest $480M in Clark airport
Aircraft maintenance provider Lufthansa Technik Philippines and logistics giant FedEx Express Corp. are set to invest at least $480 million in Clark International Airport, as part of efforts to position the gateway as a major aviation and logistics hub.
Joshua Bincang, president and CEO of Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), on Thursday said negotiations with Lufthansa are expected to be finalized within the first quarter of the year.
Meanwhile, FedEx has already completed construction planning for a new facility at the airport.
Lufthansa is proposing a $400-million investment for a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility spanning at least 15 hectares at Clark.
The planned hangar will be designed to accommodate widebody aircraft, including the Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial passenger jet.
Bingcang said Lufthansa is in “expansion mode,” adding that the company has submitted its proposal to the BCDA and has already conducted initial site surveys and ground assessments.
Meanwhile, FedEx is planning an $80-million investment to expand its Clark operations.
FedEx is eyeing a new 80,000-square-meter facility. Bingcang said equipment investments could double the value of the initial build.
The expansion aims to raise FedEx’s flight capacity at Clark from the current three to four flights daily to as many as 20.
