10 must-watch movies premiering in August

From the highly successful “Superman” to the newly released “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” July has been the month for comic book movies. But from where we’re standing, August will be just as exciting for the cinema buffs out there. After all, the horror film of the year, the best animation has to offer, and more are soon coming to theaters near you this August.
“Materialists” (August 6)
It’s no secret that dating preferences have changed over the last few years. This film questions what we prioritize, and pits comfort and security against what simply feels right. And if that isn’t enough to entice you, we’re also getting a love triangle featuring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans.
“Materialists” is directed by Celine Song, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for her directorial debut, “Past Lives.”
“Weapons” (August 6)
When Jordan Peele—director and visionary for horror films such as “Get Out,” “Us,” and “Nope”—allegedly fired his management for failing to secure the script for a movie, you know it’s going to be good.
Directed by Zach Cregger and starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Alden Ehrenreich, “Weapons” follows a town in disarray when a whole class of children mysteriously disappear.
“Freakier Friday” (August 6)
From the upcoming “Tron: Ares” to the currently in production “The Devil Wears Prada,” nostalgia is all the rage now—and rightfully so. “Freakier Friday” takes Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) on yet another untimely adventure, this time with Anna’s daughter and stepdaughter.
“Meg & Ryan” (August 6)
Starring Rhian Ramos and JC Santos, this upcoming romantic film follows Meg Zamonte and Ryan Cañete in a story about two strangers meeting and falling in love at an unexpected time.
“Meg & Ryan” is directed by Catherine O. Camarillo and stars Cedrick Juan, Ces Quesada, Cris Villanueva, Jef Gaitan, and introduces J-mee Katanyag, Steven Bansil, Poca Osinaga, and Alison Black.
“Lola Barang” (August 6)
The movie follows Joey Perez (Ronnie Lazaro), a renowned horror director. But unbeknownst to many, his stories come from Lola Barbara (Gina Pareno), a folk healer. When he forgets about his promise to make her an actress in one of his films—in exchange for her career-changing ideas—Lola Barbara hatches a plan to make him remember, in the worst way possible.
“Lola Barang” also stars Richard Quan, Marlo Mortel, Mercedes Cabral, Ronwaldo Martin, Alan Paule, Lou Veloso, Ahwel Paz, and introduces Lizzie Aguinaldo.
“The Naked Gun” (August 13)
Liam Neeson isn’t always so serious. See him in a new light as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., where he leads his police squad in a high-octane adventure to save the world.
“The Naked Gun” is directed by Akiva Schaffer and also stars Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston.
“Nobody 2” (August 13)
Nobody ever gets in the way of Bob Odenkirk—whether it be in the courtroom or on the streets. Follow the man without anything to lose as he returns as family man and assassin Hutch Mansell in “Nobody 2,” the new chapter to the 2021 hit action thriller.
The upcoming film is directed by Timo Tjahjanto, and stars Connie Nielsen, RZA, Christopher Lloyd, and Sharon Stone.
“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” (August 20)
The first chapter in the hit anime series’ climax is finally arriving in cinemas. Catch Tanjiro and the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps as they chase Muzan Kibutsuji in the demons’ stronghold—the Infinity Castle. And if early crowd reception is to be taken seriously, then we’re in for one of the best animated releases ever.

“Life of Chuck” (August 20)
From Stephen King and Mike Flanagan, “The Life of Chuck” follows the extraordinary story of an ordinary man. This unforgettable, genre-bending tale celebrates the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz as he experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.
The movie stars Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Jacob Tremblay, and Mark Hamill.
“Caught Stealing” (August 27)
Life is going rather smoothly for the once high-school baseball phenom, Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), and his girlfriend (Zoë Kravitz). But when his neighbor asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself in the crosshairs of gangsters.
