14 new and must-see anime this July

There’s something about July and entertainment: The DCU relaunch with James Gunn’s “Superman” and the MCU’s upcoming “The Fantastic Four” in the superhero-cinema space. Not to mention, Justin Bieber’s surprise album and Blackpink’s long-awaited musical comeback.

But for anime enjoyers? Fret not, as the month has both brand-new seasons and fresh adaptations in store.

From the continuation of high-profile shows such as “Dan Da Dan” and “Kaiju No. 8” to newcomers like “The Summer Hikaru Died” and “With You and the Rain,” these July anime releases are the perfect start to the second half of the year.

“Dr. Stone” Season 4 Part 2

For the uninitiated, “Dr. Stone” follows the adventures of Senku Ishigami, an extraordinary scientific mind, as he attempts to rebuild civilization after humans were turned to stone 3,700 years in the past. Using everything he knows, together with the help of revived friends and allies from both the old and new world, he strives to slowly but surely bring back the Earth he once knew.

The recently released part 2 is the second in the three-part final season of the show.

“Kaiju No. 8” Season 2

What do you do when you become the very thing you swore to destroy? Similar to Eren in “Attack on Titan”—albeit much less dark and depressing—”Kaiju No. 8” follows Kafka Hibino as he becomes a kaiju in a world hell-bent on killing those monsters. The new season picks up from where the show last ended, when Hibino’s kaiju identity is unmasked to the defense force he works with.

My Dress-up Darling

“My Dress-up Darling” Season 2

One of anime’s sweetest and most wholesome romances continues in the second season of “My Dress-up Darling,” where cosplayer Marin Kitagawa and costume designer Wakana Gojo further grow and deepen their (hopefully for now platonic) relationship.

“Dan Da Dan” Season 2

Another growing romance—with a mix of high-school drama, shounen combat, and the occult—continues in “Dan Da Dan” Season 2, where main characters Okarun and Momo face a new opponent: their friend Jin and his latent and out-of-control supernatural abilities.

“Sakamoto Days” Part 2

Imagine if John Wick had given up killing, actually retired, started a family, and opened a convenience store. “Sakamoto Days” follows Taro Sakamoto, a once legendary killer, as he gets pulled back into the world of hitmen.

The Summer Hikaru Died

“The Summer Hikaru Died”

This new horror high-school anime follows Yoshiki as he discovers that his best friend Hikaru, who surfaced after missing for months, isn’t the same person he once knew. Who is he? Or better yet, what is he? Yoshiki grapples with this new and unfamiliar reality while strange and supernatural incidents begin to plague the village he lives in.

“With You and the Rain”

Having a pet can turn a cold and lonely life into one filled with love and warmth. And while the critter Fuji took in from the streets may not exactly be a dog (or any natural animal), it’s safe to say everyday life for her has gone for the better.

Nyaight of the Living Cat

“Nyaight of the Living Cat”

What if cats suddenly took over the world, and a pandemic spread where touching a cat turns you into one? Sounds like the apocalypse to some, paradise for others. If anything, “Nyaight of the Living Cat” is set in a world where your biggest enemy is the urge to pet the cute feline.

“Gachiakuta”

In a floating city where waste and people are both discarded, Rudo, a kid framed for murder and tossed to the trash, discovers brand-new powers that’ll help him fight monsters as he uncovers the secrets of his world.

“The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity”

Rintaro Tsumugi is from a boys’ school known for its unruly students and their low grades. Kaoruko Waguri is from the prestigious Kikyo Girls’ High. Opposites do attract, and this new romance anime follows a pair who are so close yet so far apart.

“Tougen Anki”

Set in a world where monstrous Oni and the Momotaros tasked with hunting them exist, Shiki Ichinose was just a regular high school dropout caught in the middle of an ages-long conflict—that is, until he and his father are attacked and he discovers that he is an Oni.

“Takopi’s Original Sin”

“Takopi’s Original Sin” is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. If you’re expecting a heartwarming story between a cute little alien and the girl who saved them, you’re in for a long and tear-filled adventure.

“Detectives These Days Are Crazy!”

From the elderly to those who are simply stubborn, it’s a reality that the fast-paced development of the technological world often leaves many behind. For the once legendary detective Nagumo Keiichiro, he knows this despair all too well. That is until Mashiro, a high school girl, asks to become his apprentice.

“Cultural Exchange with Game Center Girl”

A title that says it all, this anime follows Kusakabe Renji, a worker at a game center, who meets Lily Baker, an English girl playing a crane game on Valentine’s Day. When Renji receives a ‘romantic’ message from her, a new romance (or friendship) begins from a linguistic misunderstanding.
