2 LPAs spotted in PAR; heavy rain warning out

Two low pressure areas (LPA) were spotted inside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), but neither is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone, the state weather bureau said on Sunday.

Instead, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the combination of an LPA with the southwest monsoon would likely cause heavy rain.

Pagasa warned of “scattered rains and thunderstorms” brought by the LPA over Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Quezon, Rizal, Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon will cause the same weather conditions in Metro Manila, Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Zamboanga Peninsula, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands and the remaining parts of Visayas, Central Luzon and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Pagasa reported.

The state weather bureau also reported southwest monsoon-induced isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in the rest of Caraga and Northern Mindanao.

Pagasa issued a severe flood advisory over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Bicol Region.

One of two LPAs was last located approximately 675 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, at 3 p.m., Pagasa stated.

Meanwhile, the other LPA was located 90 kilometers east-northeast of Daet, Camarines Norte, Pagasa said.

The LPA in the Bicol region is “unlikely” to develop into a tropical cyclone, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said on Sunday morning.

The other LPA, located 900 kilometers east of Northern Visayas, has a “low” chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

If the LPA develops into a storm in the PAR, it will be named “Kiko,” the 11th in the 2025 typhoon season.

Thus far, the strongest storm has been Tropical Storm “Isang” (international name: Kajiki), which strengthened outside the PAR, but the most costly was Typhoon “Bising” (international name: Danas), which caused $243 million in damages and 10 deaths in the region.
