2 Pinoy domestic helpers killed by employer in Lebanon
Two Filipinos working as domestic helpers in Lebanon have been shot and killed by their employer in a hostage-taking situation, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the DMW said it has extended assistance to the families of the two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were held hostage and killed by their employer in Beirut on April 15.
“The victims, both long-time household service workers in the residence, were fatally shot during the incident,” it added.
Government support
According to the DMW, their employer was arrested and has since been under the custody of the police, who are preparing a case against the suspect.
Following the incident, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac directed Undersecretaries Bernard Olalia and Felicitas Bay to personally visit the bereaved families of the victims and assure them of government support.
The DMW said that its Migrant Workers Office, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon, is working closely with Lebanese authorities to monitor the investigation and ensure the filing of appropriate charges against the suspect.
“The Philippine government remains committed to securing justice for the victims and providing continued assistance to their families, including repatriation and access to benefits,” the DMW said. —WITH A REPORT FROM PNA
