Red tide resurfaces in western Pangasinan

CALASIAO, PANGASINAN—The coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda in this province have tested positive for red tide again, just six days after being declared clear, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Ilocos Region reported on Wednesday.

Authorities warned the public against harvesting or consuming shellfish and “alamang” (Acetes sp.) from these areas, as the harmful algal bloom produces toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning.

BFAR said fish, squid, crab and shrimp remain safe if fresh, cleaned and thoroughly cooked.

Continuous monitoring confirmed the reappearance of red tide, which depletes oxygen in seawater and poses risks to marine life, humans and birds, often turning waters reddish.
