Eala ends banner year with losses in Macau

Rommel Fuertes

Alex Eala finished the Macau Tennis Masters winless after dropping her final game of the exhibition event on Sunday.

The Filipino tennis ace succumbed to Mirra Andreeva of Russia, 6-4, 6-2, in women’s singles action, which was Eala’s last match for the year that saw her skyrocket to the top 50 in the world after memorable performances around the globe.

Andreeva recovered just in time for her matchup with Eala, as the Russian had been feeling under the weather 24 hours before.

Originally, Eala and Andreeva should’ve faced off twice over the weekend: once in a women’s singles bout and another in mixed doubles action.

However, on Saturday, Andreeva needed a last-minute replacement hours before.

Instead, Eala and her partner, Jerry Shang from China, faced off against the men’s team of Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and China’s Yibing Wu.

Unfortunately, Eala also didn’t find success in that doubles bout as she and Shang absorbed a 7–5, 7(7)–6(1) loss.

The Macau Masters isn’t part of the WTA calendar, which means the 20-year-old’s losses over the weekend won’t necessarily affect her place in the World ranking.
