BIZ BUZZ: Race for a million trees

Jordeene B. Lagare

Amid the global uncertainty caused by the Middle East conflict, a different kind of movement is taking shape in the Philippines this month—a run for a million trees.

Thousands of runners, environmental advocates and corporate partners will gather at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila for a fun run dubbed “A Run for a Million Trees: An Earth Day Celebration” on April 11.

More than 4,000 participants are expected to join the Earth Day fun run organized by the Million Trees Foundation Inc. (MTFI) and QBE Group Shared Serviced Centre through its QBE Foundation.

The initiative aims to raise awareness and mobilize public support for watershed rehabilitation, urban greening and climate action across the Philippines. For every runner who participates, a tree will be planted in their honor.

The fun run will feature three race categories: 5K, 10K and 16K, starting at the Quirino Grandstand and passing through iconic Manila landmarks.

Medals and plaques for winners and partners were crafted from repurposed wood materials at MTFI’s community-based carpentry shop.

“Every step taken on April 11 is a step toward restoring our forests, protecting our watersheds, and securing a greener and peaceful future for generations to come,” MTFI President Melandrew Velasco said.
